Meriwest Credit Union Honors Winners of Its Annual Essay Competition

SAN JOSE, CA - March 9, 2007 - Meriwest Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions serving Silicon Valley, the San Francisco Bay Area and Tucson, Arizona, recently honored winners of its Annual Essay Competition in an awards ceremony at its headquarters in San Jose, California. The ceremony was attended by five of the competition's 11 winners from four age groups - 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades - along with their parents.
Meriwest President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Owen personally handed out award certificates and cash prizes to:
- Vinayak V., Second Place, 9th Grade Age Group;
- Natasha I., First Place, 11th Grade Age Group;
- Nikhil G., First Place, 12th Grade Age Group;
- Carol T., Second Place, 12th Grade Age Group; and
- Matthew W., Third Place, 12th Grade Age Group.
Meriwest received 23 submissions for this year's competition, which asked students to offer their perspective on "What It Means to be Financially Responsible." Depending on the age group and final ranking, cash prizes ranged from $100 to $1,000. Senior Nikhil G. earned the top prize of $1,000 for winning the 12th Grade age group.
Fellow senior Matthew W., third-place winner in the 12th Grade age group, told Meriwest that he plans to use his prize money to pay for books when he begins attending college in the fall. "I'm thankful that Meriwest took the time to recognize my efforts as a student, as well as my financial plans," Matthew said. "I hope that they continue to support the community through programs like the Annual Essay Competition."
"Our Annual Essay Competition is one of the ways Meriwest Credit Union raises awareness among young people about the values of money and how to soundly manage their finances," Owen said. "We are grateful for the time the students took to share their views and goals about personal finances. Based on the entries we received, it was evident that high school students appreciate the importance of being fiscally responsible."
