Meriwest Credit Union takes Second Place in California for the Dora Maxwell Award Competition

SAN JOSE, CA - Meriwest Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions serving Silicon Valley, the Greater Bay Area and Tucson, Arizona announced today that their "Financial Education for All" community program was awarded second prize in the Annual Dora Maxwell Award State Competition. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Program was established to encourage credit union and chapter involvement in community projects and activities. Community involvement is a core fundamental of any credit union's plan and a great opportunity to give something back to the community. This is the first year that Meriwest has participated in the Credit Union National Association award program.
Meriwest's Dora Maxwell entry, "Financial Education for All" program was introduced to several non-profit organizations, trade schools, and other organizations that had clients who were in need of financial knowledge. Meriwest Credit Union created a curriculum that spanned identity theft, credit repair, managing a checking account, predatory lending, foreclosure, and basic retirement planning. Working closely with their branch managers, Meriwest was able to reach out to over 1,100 community members in 48 classes from Aug. 1, '07 thru July 31 of this year. Catholic Charities, Job Corps, InnVision, Career Closet, EPA CAN DO, the Housing Authorities of Santa Clara and Alameda Counties, Central County Occupation Center, and the Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA) were among the local organizations with which Meriwest Credit Union collaborated on the financial education outreach program.
